$43 Million Wentworth Dorm Coming to Huntington Avenue

The City of Boston approved the college's plans for a new 7-story dorm at 525 Huntington Ave.

Wentworth Institute of Technology received a green light on its new 7-story, 114,000 square foot dormitory building on Huntington Avenue when the city approved its plans last week.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority unanimously approved the plans for a, $43 million, 305-bed dorm at 525 Huntington Avenue on Thursday.

The new dorm will allow Wentworth to house up to 96 percent of its student population in university housing, most of them junior and seniors.

"The majority of bedrooms (72%) will be occupied by a single student to provide the residents with an increased degree of privacy and a quality of materials and amenities that many students seek when they opt for off campus housing," the college noted in its filing with the city. "The project will expand the current campus life facilities and be designed to enhance the campus experience by motivating and attracting Wentworth Juniors and Seniors to reside in on-campus housing rather than in the surrounding neighborhoods."

The Boston Redevelopment Authority board Thursday unanimously approved Wentworth’s proposal to build a 7-story dorm at 525 Huntington Ave.

Currently, the site is a Wentworth-owned park.

Construction of the new residence hall is anticipated to start in February 2013, with students arriving in the fall semester of 2014. Wentworth has set up a live feed so you can watch the dorm's construction
