The Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Benjamin Zander, concludes its 45th season with a spectacular concert commemorating the 200th anniversary of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner’s birth. The season’s grand finale opens with renowned pianist Alessandro Deljavan
performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in C Minor with the Orchestra and closes with Bruckner’s unfinished—and final—masterpiece, the Symphony No. 9. Zander’s popular “Guide to the Music,” which is open to all ticket holders, precedes the concert at 6:45 PM. The concert will also be available for live streaming.
Zander is one of the world’s foremost interpreters of Bruckner’s music, having received the Kilyeni Medal of Honor from the Bruckner Society of America in 2021. The medal has been awarded to many other outstanding conductors, including Arturo Toscanini and Otto Klemperer, as well as musicians such as Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink, and Herbert Blomstedt. Former BSO conductor Serge Koussevitsky is the only other Boston conductor to have received the award and the first to receive it (in 1934).
Performing Bruckner’s monumental Symphony No. 9 as the 2023-24 season’s closing work serves as a fitting tribute to one of the most influential composers of the Romantic era. From the very beginning of its formation, the Orchestra has returned to Bruckner as a haven for the soul. The Ninth, which Bruckner dedicated "to the beloved God,” is known for its emotional depth and grandeur. 
 
Alessandro Deljavan, who was born of an Italian mother and an Iranian father. made his debut with the Boston Philharmonic in 2019. His captivating performances have earned him considerable critical acclaim. A student of both Menahem Pressler and Richard Goode, he has been noted as a "keyboard virtuoso with an equally virtuoso brain, ear, and imagination" by Richard Dyer, former chief classical music critic of The Boston Globe. In addition to his solo performances, he is the artistic director of the Opera Master School in Villamagna, Italy and records on his own imprint, the AERAS Music Group, which he created in 2021.

Boston Philharmonic Orchestra Celebrates Bruckner's 200th Birthday!

The Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (BPYO), composed of musicians age 12-21 from the East Coast, performs their final concert of the 2023-24 season under the baton of Founder and Conductor Benjamin Zander. The program opens with Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto followed by Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 5, which will also be performed during the BPYO’s five-city European tour from June 15-25. The concert can be experienced both in-person and via livestream.
Schumann's soul-stirring Cello Concerto features the virtuosic talents of cellist Zlatomir Fung, the youngest cellist ever to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. As Artist-in-Residence with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the 2023-24 season, Fung has appeared at London’s Cadogan Hall and is touring the UK with the orchestra. The 25-year-old has been hailed as one of the most promising young cellists of his generation: in describing his recital debut at Carnegie Hall in 2021, Bachtrack wrote "[He is] one of those rare musicians with a Midas touch: he quickly envelopes every score he plays in an almost palpable golden aura.” He last appeared with the BPYO in concert in 2022 as soloist on Elgar’s Cello Concerto and toured with the BPYO to Greece in June that year. The Westborough, MA native is a graduate of The Julliard School where he is also currently a faculty member.
Along with Dvořák’s and Elgar’s Cello Concertos, the Schumann is one of the great Romantic works for cello. “Schumann’s Cello Concerto requires an interpreter of the highest order,” says Zander. “Its moods are intimate, soulful, and confessional, almost like chamber music, and its three connected movements are like one long-drawn breath of lyricism that virtually cries out for Zlatomir’s subtlety and communicative power.”
Zander’s profound connection to Mahler's music has earned him significant recognition, including the very first Titan Award from the Mahler Society of New York. His passion for Mahler's compositions infuses every note with a profound sense of meaning and emotion.

Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Performs Schumann Cello Concerto & Mahler Symphony No. 5

The Walk for Hunger, Project Bread’s annual fundraising event and the Commonwealth’s largest and oldest day of community action against hunger, is seeking walkers for the celebration. The one-day event is set for Sunday, May 5 on the Boston Common, and will feature family-friendly activities along the 3-mile loop. In its 56th
year, Project Bread invites you to help raise more than $1.3 million to support the leading statewide food security organization’s approach to permanently solve hunger, which includes working year-round across policy initiatives, programs, and hunger prevention measures to ensure food access for all children and families in Massachusetts. 
Likeminded anti-hunger organizations can enroll in the nonprofit’s co-fundraising program, The Commonwealth, forming teams to raise money to support their own work, while also furthering Project Bread’s statewide effort.
