Fenway Center Project Could Be Derailed by Negotiations with MassDOT

The $450 million housing, retail, parking and office development project could lose investment backing because of an "impasse" with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

The $450 million Fenway Center housing, retail, parking and office development project is reportedly in jeopardy because of an "impasse" between the developer and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, according to the Boston Globe.

An anonymous source told the newspaper that one of the project's investment partners would pull out unless a leasing deal for the property is reached quickly.

A spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation told the Globe that negotiations are still being worked out.

“This notion that we’re at an impasse is untrue,” said Cyndi Roy, spokeswoman for the MassDOT told the Globe. “We’re enthusiastic about these negotiations. This is a transformative project, and we’re exploring every way possible to move it forward.”

The Fenway Center project has already gained approval by the Boston Redevelopment Authority and neighborhood groups, but has been held back by legal issues, including a lawsuit related to one of the parking lots on the site. The project would develop the area above the Massachusetts Turnpike between Beacon Street and Brookline Avenue next to Fenway Park with 550 apartments, retail stores, parking garages, and another office and residential building.
