Know Your Rep: State Senator Will Brownsberger

Will Brownsberger’s love for this country grew to new heights when he took a 41-day bike trip from his home in Belmont to Anacortes, WA.

“I recommend it to everyone,” Brownsberger said. “Put it on the life list of things to do. You get to feel how big and how great this country is. People talk in Red State or Blue State terms, but we all love this country.”

Brownsberger was elected to the State Senate in January of 2012. He represents Belmont, Watertown, Brighton, Allston, Fenway and the Back Bay. He has hosted weekly office hours at the Starbucks on Tuesday evenings since March. “People come with a wide range of issues or comments,” Brownsberger said. “They to talk about personal issues or comment on policies.”

Before running for State Senate, Brownsberger served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and was a three term Selectman in Belmont.

“I was not the class president type. I majored in math at Harvard and went into business,” Brownsberger said. “I grew into politics at a grassroots level.” Brownsberger went to work as the Assistant Attorney General under Scott Harshbarger after working on Wall Street for eight years and decided to become a public servant.

Brownsberger has several works in progress when it comes to improving the quality of life for residents of the Commonwealth, including establishing a firm financial footing for the T, reforming the criminal justice system to reduce the burden of jail, to combating climate change. He is a supporter of medical marijuana laws and is leaning towards supporting the Death with Dignity law, both of which are on the ballot in November.

“I try to always speak the truth and mean what I say,” Brownsberger said. “I believe the key to success is to treat each voter like an adult.”
