Manhole Explosion Shuts Down Comm. Ave Monday Afternoon

The inbound side of Commonwealth Avenue was shut down for about half an hour, snarling traffic in the Kenmore area during the afternoon.

A manhole explosion in the Kenmore Square area of Commonwealth Ave left one side of the street closed to traffic on Monday afternoon.

According to the Boston Fire department, a manhole at 595 Commonwealth Ave began smoking around 1:30 p.m. on Monday.

Firefighters quickly shut down the inbound side of Commonwealth Avenue from the BU bridge through Kenmore, and, 580 Commonwealth Avenue, on-campus apartment housing for BU students, was evacuated. MBTA Green Line service also skipped the Blanford Street stop.

Comm. Ave was fully reopened around 2 p.m.

Boston Fire Department spokesperson Stephen MacDonald said NStar is investigating what caused the fire.
