28 Displaced, $500,000 in Damage from Peteborough St. Fire

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the fire that started inside a vacant third-story apartment at 25 Peterborough St. on Monday night.

The two-alarm fire that started inside a Peterborough Street apartment on New Year's Eve displaced 28 residents and caused as much as $500,000 in damage, according to the Boston Fire Department.

The fire started on the third floor of the 5-story brick apartment building at 25 Peteborough St. around 5:30 p.m. Monday night before spreading into the walls and rising to the top floors, according to the Boston Fire Department. After an hour, fightfighters had knocked down the fire and began an extensive overhaul of the building.

Boston Fire Department spokesperson Steve MacDonald told the Boston Globe the fire likely started in a vacant third story apartment before spreading to the fourth floor through pipes in the building, although fire investigators have not yet officially determined the cause of the fire.
