Fallen Boston Firefighter's Father Remembers Son as Marathon Approaches

West Roxbury native Michael Kennedy was training for this year's Boston Marathon.

As the Boston Marathon approaches next week, and as thousands remember last year's bombings on Tuesday for the one-year anniversary, the father of fallen Boston Firefighter Michael Kennedy is reflecting on his son's efforts during last year's events.

Kennedy died alongside Boston Fire Lt. Edward Walsh in the line of duty while battling a massive nine-alarm fire in Back Bay on March 26.

A Hyde Park resident and native of West Roxbury, Kennedy, 33, ran last year's marathon and was among those who ran to victims' aid during last year's Boston Marathon bombings. He was also training for this year's upcoming race, WHDH reported Monday

Kennedy's father, Paul Kennedy, reflected on his son's efforts this week, saying he was close to the finish line at last year's race when his son approached. He told WHDH that his son did not discuss details of what he saw on Boylston Street last year out of respect of the victims.

Kennedy said that as he grieves for his son, he is simply taking it "one day at at time, one minute at a time, one second at a time," according to the report.
