Police: Man Fought with Officer After Bicycle Chase at Northeastern

A Mattapan man was arrested for assaulting a Northeastern police officer.

The following information was supplied by the Boston Police Department. Charges listed do not indicate convictions.

Police arrested a Mattapan man for assaulting a police officer after police tried to confront him about a stolen bicycle on the Northeastern campus on Wednesday.

A Northeastern police officer reported seeing a man suspiciously drape a bike lock over a short lamp around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The officer said he thought it was odd that the man had "locked" the bike up on the lamp post, which was only three feet tall.

Police said they tried to stop the man, but he rode off on the bike, leading to a short chase. As the suspect approached the Ruggles T Station on Forsyth Street, an unknown male stepped in front of the suspect, blocking his path.

Upon questioning, the man allegedly told the officer he leaves the bike there locked every day. However, the man did not have a set of keys to the bike lock, the officer said. Police said the man pulled out a large pair of nail clippers with the nail file extended from his pocket, and told the officer that this was how he opened the lock.

As the officer ran the suspect’s information, the man reportedly grabbed the officer’s uniform and shoved him, according to police. The suspect then took off towards the Snell Library. The officer was able to catch up to the suspect and placed him in handcuffs after a brief struggle, said police. After patting down the suspect, the officer reportedly found another pair of clippers and a pair of pliers.

Officers charged David Jordan of 158 Almont Street, Mattapan, with assault and battery on a police officer.
