Fenway High School Hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony

On May 8, Fenway High School hosted a ceremony to celebrate the start of construction on its new Mission Hill facility, which will open in the fall of 2015. The event was attended by city and local representatives, including Mayor Marty Walsh, Representative Jeffrey Sanchez, and School Superintendent John McDonough; Fenway students and staff; and members of the community.

The move will allow Fenway to accommodate more students, including English Language Learners.  In addition, the move to the Mission Hill building marks an important milestone.  For the entirety of its 30-year existence, Fenway has shared space with other schools and colleges; it currently shares a building on Ipswich Street with Boston Arts Academy.   During the ceremony, Mayor Walsh acknowledged this fact and told the students the new facility would be a place that they could truly call their own.

Superintendent McDonough and Fenway Head of School Peggy Kemp also spoke, recognizing all the parties that made the move possible and speaking to the school’s hopeful future.  Other speakers included Fenway board co-chairs Dottie Engler and Bob Ross, Representative Sanchez, and Fenway Associate Head of School Kevin Brill.
