Fallen Service Members Honored on Boston Common

Dignitaries speak at Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund flag display.

With over 33,000 small American flags planted in the ground on Boston Common, dozens gathered nearby Thursday to pay tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service to their country. Each flag represented a U.S. serviceman or woman from Massachusetts who has died in uniform since the American Civil War, and each flag was planted by volunteers with the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund. "This display stops people directly in their tracks," said Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund President Steve Kerrigan. "And that, of course, is exactly the point." "We shall never forget the sacrifices made by those who gave us our freedom today," said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino. The names of 187 military members who died in service were read …

The following information was supplied by the Boston Police Department. Charges listed do not indicate convictions.

A Fenway man was charged with beating up a woman on Tuesday, May 21. Boston police officers responded to a report of a fight at 45 Peterborough Street at about 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21.  Officers met with the caller who stated that a man beat up her sister and the police needed to deal with the situation. The officers went into the apartment and met with the victim, who said that she and a man were in an argument that turned violent when she told him to leave. She told police that the man choked her until she couldn’t breath, bent her wrist back and smashed her head against the wall. The victim told the police that the suspect threatened to kill her if she called the cops. The police arrested Bryan Harris of 45 Peterborough Street and…

Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011.  In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest …

Marathon Victims Pushed to Meet One Fund Boston June 15 Deadline

Administrator Kenneth Feinberg is urging people to submit completed claims and offered help filling out the forms.

One Fund Boston administrator Kenneth Feinberger is urging Boston Marathon bombing victims to get claims in before the June 15 deadine. “You would be amazed at how people in grief, with all sorts of uncertainty about their lives, don’t file. File at the last minute. File claim forms written in crayon,”Feinberg told the Boston Herald. Funds are scheduled to start being distributed on June 30, with the three families who lost a loved one to receive around $1 million.  Next, those who suffered double amputations or more would receive funds, then single amputees, then those who required an overnight hospital stay. The final protocol for dispersing funds can be viewed on the One Fund site. Downloadable claim forms are available through the One …

17 Boston Mayoral Candidates Submit Signatures

Tuesday at 5 p.m. was the deadline for submitting nomination signatures to be a candidate on the ballot.

Seventeen possible Boston mayoral candidates submitted papers Tuesday before the 5 p.m. deadline at City Hall. But that doesn't mean all 17 will be on the ballot in the Sept. 24 election, as 3,000 individual signatures must be certified by June 25. Twenty-four people signed out nomination papers by the May 13 deadline, which leaves seven potential candidates by the wayside following this week's cut-off. With 17 possible candidates vying for signatures across Boston, it is possible that some voters signed for multiple candidates, and signatures can only count once. First come, first served is the rule, so some signatures may be thrown out.  But for now there are some heavyweights in the biggest Boston election in decades. City Councilors …

Report: Boston Getting More Bike Lanes, Hubway

Officials told the Boston Herald the city is committed to making local roadways more bike-friendly.

Boston will be getting more bike lanes and Hubway bike share stations, the Boston Herald reported Tuesday, just two days after a visiting MIT scientist was struck and killed while riding her bike in the Kenmore Square area. The city plans to add up to 20 miles of new bike lanes and 20 new Hubway kiosks and might also look to install cycle tracks on major roadways from Roxbury to the Public Garden, Transportation Commissioner Tom Tinlin told the Herald. Last week, a new Hubway station opened at the recently built Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in the Charlestown Navy Yard, and Boston Bikes Director Nicole Freedman told Patch that another kiosk is planned in the Hayes Square area. With plans to install more stations in South Boston, …
