Boston First Responders Fund Established to Help Marathon Victims

Donations can be made online or checks can be mailed to the fund organized by Boston's Fire, Police, EMS organizations.

  The Boston First Responders Fund has been established by our city's first responders to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon attacks.  "(The Boston Marathon) was a sad day for the city of Boston, our state and our nation,” said Edward Kelly, president of the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts, via press release. “(Patriots' Day) we cared for the victims and today we want to take care of them moving forward. To the families of the victims of (Monday's) tragedy, we can never bring your loved ones back or take away the injuries you sustained from this attack. This fund is one way to hopefully provide comfort in your time of need.”  Richie Paris, president of Boston Firefighters Local 718, said 100 percent of donations will go …

Firefighters Rescue Man in Muddy River During Brush Fire

The discovery came as firefighters fought to put out a brush fire.

Firefighters battling a brush fire along the Muddy River were surprised to find a man floating in the water. Firefighters responded at 6 p.m. Saturday to calls of  small fire along the river's walking trail, near the department's dispatch center (located in the same building as police headquarters).  "While extinguishing the fire, an adult male was found in the river. [Two] firefighters with water survival suits entered the water," according to the fire departent. The man was badly burned and taken to Boston Medical Center for treatment, according to the department.

Large Fire Strikes Commonwealth Avenue Brownstone

The fire caused $5 million in damage but, thankfully, no injuries.

Investigators say that in-floor radiant heating caused the three-alarm fire in a Commonwealth Avenue brownstone Wednesday morning that resulted in $5 million of damage but no injuries.  Firefighters responded to the five-story, three-condo building at 9:18 a.m. and quickly called for backup.  "[Firefighters] were here in a matter seconds," said John Walsh, who lives on the third floor of 17 Commonwealth Ave. and was the only one of the building's occupants who was home when alarms sounded. "When they came into the building the assessed that there was some smoke coming.  Without any hesitation, they called for additional backup and they went right into the building, up the stairs," he said.  Walsh said he was in the shower when he heard the…

Soldiers Field Reopened This Morning After Tour Bus Accident Saturday Night

No further details are available at this time concerning potential charges against the driver of the bus, or the condition or count of victims still at area hospitals.

Soldiers Field Road was reopened Sunday at 3:30 a.m., eight hours after a tour bus with 42 people on board hit Bowker Overpass. Rescue personnel worked through Saturday night first removing the victims and then clearing the bus from the road. Of the 42 passengers, 36 people were injured, including three with serious injuries and one with a life-threatening injury.  Approximately 21 went to to Beth Israel Deaconness, three to Brigham & Womens, three to New England Medical Center, seven to  Massachusetts General Hospital and one to Boston Medical Center. Boston Ends 2012 With Lowest Number of Fire Deaths in Large Cities Across U.S.

Among big cities, the city of Boston has had only four deaths due to fire since 2009, according to the Boston Fire Department.

For the second consecutive year, the city of Boston has reported the lowest number of deaths due to fire out of the nation's large cities. The only fire-related death in Boston last year was in early 2012. An elderly man who lived in a high-rise apartment in Dorchester was killed in a three-alarm blaze that also sent three others and a firefighter to the hospital. Boston's only fire death in 2012 is low compared to Baltimore with 12, Philadelphia with 25, Milwaukee with eight, Phoenix with six, and Washington D.C. with seven. Manhole Explosion Shuts Down Comm. Ave Monday Afternoon

The inbound side of Commonwealth Avenue was shut down for about half an hour, snarling traffic in the Kenmore area during the afternoon.

A manhole explosion in the Kenmore Square area of Commonwealth Ave left one side of the street closed to traffic on Monday afternoon. According to the Boston Fire department, a manhole at 595 Commonwealth Ave began smoking around 1:30 p.m. on Monday. Firefighters quickly shut down the inbound side of Commonwealth Avenue from the BU bridge through Kenmore, and, 580 Commonwealth Avenue, on-campus apartment housing for BU students, was evacuated. MBTA Green Line service also skipped the Blanford Street stop.  Comm. 28 Displaced, $500,000 in Damage from Peteborough St. Fire

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the fire that started inside a vacant third-story apartment at 25 Peterborough St. on Monday night.

The two-alarm fire that started inside a Peterborough Street apartment on New Year's Eve displaced 28 residents and caused as much as $500,000 in damage, according to the Boston Fire Department.  The fire started on the third floor of the 5-story brick apartment building at 25 Peteborough St. around 5:30 p.m. Monday night before spreading into the walls and rising to the top floors, according to the Boston Fire Department. After eight hours of searching, rescue teams called off their efforts to find the man who reportedly jumped off the Mass. Ave bridge early Tuesday morning and have started efforts to recover his body.

After eight hours of searching, rescue teams called off their efforts to find the man who reportedly jumped off the Mass. Ave bridge early Tuesday morning, according to the Boston Fire Department, and have started efforts to recover his body. Around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday night, a cab driver reported to police that he saw a man jump off the bridge into the Charles River. The report launched a full-scale search and rescue effort by Boston Police, the Boston Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police for several hours, before it was scaled back around 7:30 a.m. to a search for the man's body. Man Jumped off Mass. Ave Bridge on New Year's Eve

The Boston Fire Department has been searching the Charles River, but searches so far have been unsuccessful.

Wed. morning update: The search was unsuccessful and was called off. See here for more details. The Boston Fire Department is attempting to recover the body of a man who jumped off the Harvard Bridge from Massachusetts Avenue early on New Year's Day. Boston Fire and police responded to a call at 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning that a man had jumped off the bridge. A cab driver reportedly saw him jump. Massachusetts State Police, Cambridge Police and Boston Police spent several hours searching the water. State Police divers were still searching the river into late Tuesday morning.
